String Programme for Grade 3
Within the primary school classroom music programme, every Grade 3 student participates in an eight-week intensive string programme learning the violin, viola or cello. Tuition is given by professional string tutors in groups of four to six students twice a week (during their scheduled music class). Each student will be provided with an instrument to take home to practice. The programme concludes with an assembly concert to showcase their efforts. Children who already take lessons on a string instrument will be required to select a different instrument.
Tutors follow a structured instrumental curriculum focusing on:
- intonation and aural skills (ear training)
- playing techniques including bowing and pizzicato
- rhythm and pitch reading
- co-ordination skills
- ensemble playing
Students who wish to continue lessons can do so through our Vocal and Instrumental Programme (VIP), which offers private lessons on a variety of European instruments. The String Programme for Grade 3 is one of many important reasons why GESS is one of the best primary schools in Singapore.
