News at GESS

Dear parents, Dear colleagues, Dear GESS community,
Posted 14/06/2018 04:10PM

The end of the academic year is coming closer and there are still some things to do. Parents, Board of Governors, school management, teachers and students have achieved a lot together since August 2017 and the student numbers reflect this. We already have 8% more students in the Pre-School, 9% more in the European Section and 7% more in the German Section compared to the same time in 2017. We will most likely start with over 1600 students in August. Thank you very much for your loyal support. This very positive development would not have been possible without you!

Last week, I attended the principal’s conference of German schools abroad, which was integrated into the world congress of the committee of German schools abroad. An important topic at the conference was digitalisation and the so called ‘Learning in the 21st Century’. We are on the right path with our EdTech Plan, the upcoming professional development sessions, good equipment at the new campus on Dairy Farm Lane and with our EdTech coaches. Of course, there is always room for improvement.

It was also good to hear that the foreign education system has a good reputation within the German political arena and will be continuously supported.

Last week, the annual “Roman Day” took place and the Musical “Olivia” was performed three times at the Junior School Campus. I would like to thank everyone who was involved in organising and conducting these events.

On Friday, 8 June and on Saturday, 9 June our Abitur and IB Diploma graduates were bidden farewell at the Graduation Ceremony and the Graduation Ball. Thank you very much to all parents and staff members, who were involved in planning, organising and conducting the events.

Please do not be surprised that you will soon receive the student contract from us via email. To comply with the Committee for Private Education regulations, digital student contracts for 2018/19 will be sent out to all GESS families in June. The contract is to be electronically signed, using the DocuSign software. You do not need to print and sign the contract and it is simply signed electronically online. As the contract can only be sent to one email address, the contract will be sent to the first parent email address in your child's records. The contract will need to be signed by 16 July 2018.

I wish you a nice last week of school before the summer break.

Christoph Zänglein

IB Curriculum

The English speaking European Section of GESS is a fully fledged International Baccalaureate World School, and one of the few in the world who are authorised to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Since opening in 2005, the European Section has grown rapidly to become a school with a reputation for quality education with a strong community feel. We now have over 600 students. The vast majority of our students are European passport holders, for whom GESS represents a vital connection with home. Students are thus provided with a safe, friendly and familiar environment in which they are challenged to thrive as they grow into independent and responsible global citizens.

Our academic and pastoral programmes are designed to support this demographic and ultimately to prepare our students for returning to Europe or for entry into European universities. To this end we endeavor to support mother tongue language acquisition so that our students do not lose this vital connection with their home culture. Fortunately, given the high entry requirements into European schools and colleges, this also means that our students are especially well prepared for study all over the world, particularly North America, the UK and Australia.

The Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.

German Curriculum

Since the school was founded in 1971, the school has evolved into a school with two sections. As an accredited “Excellent German School Abroad”, the German Section of the German European School Singapore (GESS) offers all major German school leaving certificates. The European Section is an authorized IB World School offering education in English across all three IB programmes.

The German Section supports the students to develop their German roots. We give them wings for the linguistic demands of a globalized world through our differentiated English programme from grade 1 onwards. In secondary school some subjects are taught in English. Our students are benefitting from numerous bonding activities and have additional space to enjoy the internationality of the school.

Our Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.
