The Sports Report: ACSIS Season 2, Final's Week
Posted 09/02/2018 03:10PM

GESS Badminton Boys 11UBadminton: Gold for GESS! The 11U boys and Coach Pocklington topped off a superb season by winning their last two games against Nexus and NPS. What was especially remarkable was a convincing win from Grade 2 student Nils Braun against a Grade 6 opponent. Overall, the team not only finished the season undefeated but also managed not to lose a single set in the process. It was an impressive performance in what has been a perfect season.

GESS Football Girls 11UFootball (Juniors): Saturday, 3 February, was Final’s Day and all our teams were on the road to finish the season successfully. The boys’ teams played well in their tournaments and both finished fifth overall. In the play-offs, the 10U team outclassed Global Indian School 4:0 while the 11U team was as cool as cucumbers and scored all three of their penalties in a decisive shoot-out against Stamford. It was now up to the 11U girls to bring home some medals and they did indeed deliver with a superb third place and, thus, bronze medals. The team had been competing exceptionally well throughout the season and Coach Turner was also very much delighted with their performance on Final’s Day.

GESS Football Girls 14UFootball (Seniors): This is probably one of the greatest comeback stories of the GESS sports year: After suffering from numerous injuries, our 14U girls’ Team B had lost their first two season games quite badly. Yet, the team crawled back, slowly but steadily, goal by goal and point by point even though they played outnumbered sometimes. A 6:1 win over St. Joseph’s in the last season game finally put them in third place and now the girls can celebrate some surprising but well-deserved bronze medals. Meanwhile, Team A fought well in their game for bronze but Stamford was eventually the better team. A fourth place in Singapore’s top division is still an outstanding achievement. Last but not least, our boys’ Team A had two more games to play this week. A 4:3 win over Dulwich and a 1:5 loss against a strong Canadian team eventually secured them a third place in Division 2 and yet another set of shiny bronze medals.

GESS Volleyball Girls 14UVolleyball: Bronze for GESS! Supported by a great crowd in the sports hall, our 14U ladies managed to win the game for third place against UWC East in two sets. Great job, girls! And congratulations on a fantastic season in ACSIS Division 1!

GESS Basketball Boys 12UBasketball: The 12U boys’ ‘Dream Team’ finished the season with another exciting victory over Nexus and, thus, straight wins in Division 3. The boys received their well-deserved gold medals after the game.

GESS Swim TeamSwimming: A joint GESS swim team from both campuses went together to the Pilot Sprint League at Tanglin Trust School last Tuesday. Coach Leighton and Coach Hutchins took a total of 22 swimmers, ranging from Grade 4 till 12, under their wings, who all represented our school amazingly well and had a fun and sunny afternoon. It was a great first edition of a swim meet that will hopefully become a regular event series.

IB Curriculum

The English speaking European Section of GESS is a fully fledged International Baccalaureate World School, and one of the few in the world who are authorised to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Since opening in 2005, the European Section has grown rapidly to become a school with a reputation for quality education with a strong community feel. We now have over 600 students. The vast majority of our students are European passport holders, for whom GESS represents a vital connection with home. Students are thus provided with a safe, friendly and familiar environment in which they are challenged to thrive as they grow into independent and responsible global citizens.

Our academic and pastoral programmes are designed to support this demographic and ultimately to prepare our students for returning to Europe or for entry into European universities. To this end we endeavor to support mother tongue language acquisition so that our students do not lose this vital connection with their home culture. Fortunately, given the high entry requirements into European schools and colleges, this also means that our students are especially well prepared for study all over the world, particularly North America, the UK and Australia.

The Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.

German Curriculum

Since the school was founded in 1971, the school has evolved into a school with two sections. As an accredited “Excellent German School Abroad”, the German Section of the German European School Singapore (GESS) offers all major German school leaving certificates. The European Section is an authorized IB World School offering education in English across all three IB programmes.

The German Section supports the students to develop their German roots. We give them wings for the linguistic demands of a globalized world through our differentiated English programme from grade 1 onwards. In secondary school some subjects are taught in English. Our students are benefitting from numerous bonding activities and have additional space to enjoy the internationality of the school.

Our Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.
