The Passing of Dieter Gumpert

Our founding father, Mr. Dieter Gumpert, born 18 March 1942, passed away after battling a serious illness, on 27 November 2018.

In 1962, a 19-year-old Mr. Gumpert was sent to Singapore by the company he worked for then, Behn Meyer, as an Assistant to the Managing Director. He became an active member of the German Association and eventually went on to co-found the Deutsche Schule Singapore (at present known as the German European School Singapore) in 1971.

During its infant days, it was Mr. Gumpert’s hands that the school held tight, his lead that it followed and his ideas and vision that it gained momentum from. As a leader, he namely served as the President of the School’s Board from 1979 to 1996. Apart from that, he also held various positions, such as Honorary Treasurer, and served in numerous capacities both before and after his tenure as President.

As a supportive father of the school, he made it a point to be present at every milestone event, up to our very recent campus opening ceremony in August 2018. Words do not suffice in capturing the gratitude we feel for his extraordinary life and GESS stands here as a legacy of that life.
