After successful participation in the Jugend Debattiert competition last year, GESS played host to the event from 19 to 22 January this year. Hopeful young debaters from the German schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur flew in to participate in a series of training sessions and seminars which culminated in a vigorous oratorical battle.

Eventually, the outcome was determined by finalists’ ability to defend their respective stands pertaining to these topics: “Should work for non-profit organisations be mandatory for all students at German schools abroad?” and “Should there by penalties for countries that violate air quality standards?”. The event certainly trained students in the art of critical thinking, reasoning and persuasion. Our heartiest congratulations to the winning debaters - Sol Park from Seoul and Marlena Onochie from Shanghai.
