Dutch Mother Tongue Programme

Our Dutch Mother Language Programme, which runs from Grade 1 to 12, will help your child gain native level proficiency in the Dutch language and enable them to integrate into the Dutch school system almost seamlessly, in case of repatriation. It will also give students who desire to enroll in a Netherlands university a notable advantage.


Kindergarten and Pre-Primary

Frequency: 

2 lessons per week (after school)

Lesson Focus:

Dutch vocabulary, spoken language abilities and emergent and early literacy taught through, for instance, games and songs.

Grades 1 to 5

Frequency: 

1 lesson per week (after school). Additional fees apply.

Lesson Focus:

Reading, writing, spoken language skills and enabling language usage through the exploration of thematic units.

Grade 6 to 10

Frequency: 

4 lessons per week within the regular school day

Lesson Focus: 

Dutch language and literature following the IB MYP framework. Students also have one weekly lesson devoted to  the social, cultural, historical and political aspects of Netherlands and Belgium.

Grade 11 to 12

Frequency: 

4 lessons per week within the regular school day

Lesson Focus: 

Dutch Language A (Language and Literature) following the IB Diploma programme. Students also have one weekly lesson devoted to  the social, cultural, historical and political aspects of Netherlands and Belgium.

The Dutch Mother Tongue Programme at GESS is conducted in cooperation with Lanuage One.
