Languages offered in the IB Curriculum

English

English is the language of instruction in the IB Curriculum.

English support programme (EAL)

We offer a comprehensive English support programme for students in grades 1 to 7. Students will receive additional support in small groups to develop their English fluency and academic English.

German

Students in grades 1 to 10 study German. In each grade there are different levels offered from beginner, intermediate to mother tongue.

Danish mother tongue students in grades 1 to 5 do not study German.

Danish

Danish mother tongue is offered during the school day to students in grades 1 to 12. Students need to have an age appropriate level of fluency in Danish to join this programme.

Dutch

GESS offers a Dutch mother tongue programme to students in Primary and Secondary. In Primary, the programme is after-school and in Secondary lessons are integrated into the timetable. Students can study Dutch mother tongue (language A) for the IB Diploma.

Dutch mother tongue programme students will need an age appropriate fluency in Dutch to join the programme.

French

Students from grade 6 to 12 can choose French as their third language choice. French mother tongue level is also offered for an additional fee.


For native or near-native French speakers, GESS offers a language programme after-school for students in grades 1 to 5.

Spanish

Students from grade 6 to 12 can choose Spanish as their third language choice. Spanish mother tongue level is also offered for an additional fee.

For native or near-native Spanish speakers, GESS offers a language programme after-school for students in grades 1 to 5.

Mandarin

Students from grade 6 to 12 can choose Mandarin as their third language choice. Mandarin mother tongue level is also offered for an additional fee.

For native or near-native Mandarin speakers, GESS offers a language programme after-school for students in grades 1 to 5.

Other Mother Tongue Languages

A range of mother tongue languages can be chosen as an optional afternoon language class from grade 1 to 12.

Primary School (grade 1 to 5): The languages are practiced in a weekly 90-minute Language Enrichment Programme (LEP) after school through fun and interactive language-focused activities.

Middle School (grade 6 to 10): Languages are taught by external tutors, according to the IB objectives, to enable students to maintain native level proficiency in mother tongue languages (other than English, German, Dutch and Danish).

High school (grade 11 to 12): Languages are taught by external tutors to reach mother tongue at IB Diploma level independently by following the language A (literature standard level course).
