German European School Singapore (GESS): Information for University and College Admissions Teams

The German European School Singapore (GESS) is a multilingual, not-for-profit, international school in Singapore. GESS is accredited as an ‘Excellent German School Abroad’ and also by the Council of International Schools (CIS).

At our new campus (opened August 2018) GESS provides an international education to 1760 students of more than 65 nationalities from Pre-School to Grade 12. Since its foundation in 1971, GESS has evolved into a school with two sections. As an authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, our European Section offers tuition in English for students across all three IB programmes: the PYP, the MYP and the IB Diploma. The German Section of GESS offers all major German school leaving certificates. GESS is a private school association led by an elected committee and the school management.

Covid-19 and its impact on IB Diploma students at the German European School Singapore (GESS): Information for University and College Admissions Teams

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the teaching and learning of the IB Diploma Class of 2021 at GESS has been as follows:

  • 38 on-campus teaching days were lost to our Grade 11 IB Diploma students during the academic year 2019-20 as the school complied with the Singapore government guidelines restricting activities at educational establishments.
  • To date, no on-campus teaching days have been lost to our Grade 12 IB Diploma students during the current academic year.
  • Home learning was facilitated throughout the period of school closure (April-June 2020) for the whole school using the Microsoft (MS) Teams platform. All Grade 11 IB Diploma students had access to appropriate devices for home learning and were familiar with the workings of the MS Teams platform.
  • The scheduled IB English A Individual Oral was the only IB Internal Assessment adversely affected by the school closure. This assessment was postponed and has been rescheduled for December 2020.
  • The Grade 11 IB Diploma internal end-of-year examinations were postponed as a result of the Covid-19 situation. The examinations were subsequently rescheduled for September 2020, and results from these examinations have been used as part of the data supporting our teachers’ work to generate IB predicted grades.
