IB Diploma Programme (DP)

Welcome to the High School Programme!

The GESS high school runs in grades 11 and 12, and our curriculum is that of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Within our high school our students follow one of two graduation pathways:

  • The GESS High School Diploma (taking certificates in some IB Diploma subjects)
  • The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme

High School experience

Some of the core elements of the experience of a student in our high school include:

  • Connection with a homeroom teacher who will be their school ‘parent’ and first point of contact each day.
  • A programme of Personal, social and health education lessons to foster their personal awareness and ‘life’ skills.
  • Weekly university counselling lessons with an experienced guidance counsellor.
  • Community bonding events, such as community service, assemblies, bonding days and project weeks.
  • A dedicated high school welfare coordinator (our Assistant head of high school) and a dedicated academic coordinator (our Diploma Programme Coordinator).
  • Opportunity to study their mother tongue language and a diverse range of subjects within the curriculum.
  • An extensive range of after school activities (CCA programme).

We very much support our students to ensure the right pathway for them as an individual and we support this by offering continuous further education guidance lesson on a weekly basis throughout the two years of high school. These lessons are facilitated by our University Guidance counsellor. Our graduates have successfully gone on to a variety of well-respected Universities and Colleges in many different countries and so our university guidance counsellors have a range of expertise with the process and requirements of tertiary education in a variety of countries.

Within the Diploma Programme, students are able to graduate with DSD2 (Deutsches Sprachdiplom 2) which enables them to study at any German University without having to pass a German language test. For further information on DSD2, please use this link on the website of Kultusministerkonferenz (DE).

Curriculum

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme is a rigorous two-year curriculum, aimed at highly motivated students between the ages of 16 to 19 years. It leads to a qualification that is widely recognised by the world’s leading universities and focuses on developing in-depth academic knowledge and skills.

Whilst we value the personal focus we can maintain on each and every one of our students by maintaining a smaller cohort size, we still facilitate a diverse range of subject choices and supplement our in-house expertise through online learning facilitators such as Pamoja. If you would like to know more about the GESS IB Diploma programme and more specifically the subjects we offer then please download a copy of the Handbook of Studies with detailed course descriptions here.

The GESS International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme has been highly successful with students consistently outperforming the worldwide average grade by several points. With our highest achieving student obtaining the maximum Diploma point score of 45 points and a place at the prestigious Cambridge University in the UK. Please find our IB Diploma results here.

Why do we think the IB Diploma Programme is the best curriculum for our students? Because we believe it instils a solid knowledge base for tertiary education whilst more importantly developing the individual child as a learner. We believe that the IB curriculum offers students the opportunity to develop a strong set of learning skills which will not only ensure their success within our school but also a strong preparation for the requirements of the next stage in their academic career.

We are always keen to build upon the current success of our high school and as such these are some of the key areas of focus:

All DP teachers to complete further IB certified professional development in approaches to learning within the current diploma programme.

  • Increased frequency of parent ‘morning tea’ information sessions.
  • The launch of the quarterly student newsletter.
  • Ongoing development of the talented student's mentorship programme.

IB Curriculum

The English speaking European Section of GESS is a fully fledged International Baccalaureate World School, and one of the few in the world who are authorised to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Since opening in 2005, the European Section has grown rapidly to become a school with a reputation for quality education with a strong community feel. We now have over 600 students. The vast majority of our students are European passport holders, for whom GESS represents a vital connection with home. Students are thus provided with a safe, friendly and familiar environment in which they are challenged to thrive as they grow into independent and responsible global citizens.

Our academic and pastoral programmes are designed to support this demographic and ultimately to prepare our students for returning to Europe or for entry into European universities. To this end we endeavor to support mother tongue language acquisition so that our students do not lose this vital connection with their home culture. Fortunately, given the high entry requirements into European schools and colleges, this also means that our students are especially well prepared for study all over the world, particularly North America, the UK and Australia.

The Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.

German Curriculum

Since the school was founded in 1971, the school has evolved into a school with two sections. As an accredited “Excellent German School Abroad”, the German Section of the German European School Singapore (GESS) offers all major German school leaving certificates. The European Section is an authorized IB World School offering education in English across all three IB programmes.

The German Section supports the students to develop their German roots. We give them wings for the linguistic demands of a globalized world through our differentiated English programme from grade 1 onwards. In secondary school some subjects are taught in English. Our students are benefitting from numerous bonding activities and have additional space to enjoy the internationality of the school.

Our Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.
