Meet the board and staff


 



Jamshid Medora

Chairman, GESS Fund Board

With almost 30 years of experience in the charity sector in Singapore, Jamshid is a precious asset to the GESS Fund Board. A public accountant by training, Jamshid went on to be the founding and managing partner of Touche Ross in Singapore in 1980.

Jamshid has extensive audit experience across a range of clients and industries. He was awarded the Public Service Medal and the Public Service Star by the State of Singapore. Jamshid was also awarded the Gold merit award by the ICPAS for services to the profession and community. He is also a Justice of the Peace.



Angela Douglas

Vice Chairman, GESS Fund Board

Angela Douglas initially moved to Singapore in 2000 to set up and run the Asia-Pacific Office of an International Financial Trade Association. She has a background in law and finance and has more than 15 years of experience in working with non-for-profit organisations. From 2010-2013 Ms Douglas served as Honorary Secretary on the School Board of GESS and was involved setting up the GESS Fund for the benefit of GESS.

Ms Douglas speaks English, German and Dutch. She has two children in the primary school at GESS. She is keen to see the school prosper further and believes that the GESS Fund will bring a significant benefit to students and the GESS Community as a whole.



Roger van Baal

Honorary Treasurer, GESS Fund Board

Roger van Baal, Honorary Treasurer GESS Foundation
Roger has lived in Singapore since end 2007. He has a master in business economics with a background in corporate finance and project management as well as extensive people management experience. Roger is currently COO of a Singapore based international company and sits on the boards of a global petrochemical company, a Singapore based ship owner, a Dutch based education provider, and a South East Asian Aquaculture firm.

Roger and his wife have 2 children, the eldest has now left GESS and studies business at the University of Edinburgh, the youngest is currently in Euro Sec. Roger is Hon. Treasurer of the GESS Board and in his position on the GESS Fund Board he aims to help drive fundraising for the School to support the development above and beyond the classroom with premises, facilities and structures in line with the School’s academic aspirations as part of its 30-year plan at the Dairy Farm Campus.



Dr Wolfgang Klemm

Director, GESS Fund Board

Wolfgang is a Managing Director in Temasek’s Portfolio Management team. Previously, he has been with strategy consulting firm Bain & Company, managed and turned around Eracom Technologies – an IT security company – and invested in mid-sized companies for a group of high net worth individuals. Wolfgang holds a PhD in corporate strategy from LMU Munich and an MBA from Drake University. He has received scholarships from the Fulbright Commission and from the German National Academic Foundation.

Wolfgang has two young sons attending GESS, and he has a special interest in educational technology. He is looking forward to supporting the GESS Fund in enhancing our students’ experience above and beyond the classroom.



Su-Lyn Tan Meyer

Director, GESS Fund Board

Su-Lyn holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Design and Environmental Analysis from Cornell University in the United States. She comes from a background of hospitality design and branding, having worked on various hospitality projects including the Russian Tea Room and Tavern on the Green in New York.

She is a Singapore Citizen married to a German, who himself is an alumnus of GESS. They have 2 children in the EuroSec Primary section. Su-Lyn was the EuroSec Primary Parent Committee Representative, a Class Parent and she served on the Canteen Committee of GESS from September 2013 till August 2014, when she stepped down to take up her position as a member of the Board of Governors. Su-Lyn is firmly committed to improving the school for all stakeholders.


Cristina Bertolino

Director of Advancement

Cristina Bertolino, Director of AdvancementCristina joined GESS in July 2015 to lead the GESS Fund. She brings 8 years of experience in corporate asset raising and key account management in the banking sector. She has worked in both Europe and Asia where she has built a strong network of contacts. She holds a degree in Engineering and a MSc in Economics. She is passionate about philanthropic fundraising and she is proud to be part of the GESS team. She believes in impact investing and in the importance of an enriched German European educational experience for our students in Singapore.

IB Curriculum

The English speaking European Section of GESS is a fully fledged International Baccalaureate World School, and one of the few in the world who are authorised to deliver the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (IBDP).

Since opening in 2005, the European Section has grown rapidly to become a school with a reputation for quality education with a strong community feel. We now have over 600 students. The vast majority of our students are European passport holders, for whom GESS represents a vital connection with home. Students are thus provided with a safe, friendly and familiar environment in which they are challenged to thrive as they grow into independent and responsible global citizens.

Our academic and pastoral programmes are designed to support this demographic and ultimately to prepare our students for returning to Europe or for entry into European universities. To this end we endeavor to support mother tongue language acquisition so that our students do not lose this vital connection with their home culture. Fortunately, given the high entry requirements into European schools and colleges, this also means that our students are especially well prepared for study all over the world, particularly North America, the UK and Australia.

The Pre-School department provides education from 18 month to 6 years in either English or German. Children are placed in groups according to their age.

 

German Curriculum

Since the school was founded in 1971, the school has evolved into a school with two sections. As an accredited “Excellent German School Abroad”, the German Section of the German European School Singapore (GESS) offers all major German school leaving certificates. The European Section is an authorized IB World School offering education in English across all three IB programmes.

The German Section supports the students to develop their German roots. We give them wings for the linguistic demands of a globalized world through our differentiated English programme from grade 1 onwards. In secondary school some subjects are taught in English. Our students are benefitting from numerous bonding activities and have additional space to enjoy the internationality of the school.
