Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)
In addition to the Core curriculum students will have one tutorial lesson each week during which they work through a series of PSHE topics which include, study skills, collaboration, information literacy, finance, body image, relationships, drugs.
Language A
Language A is considered the student’s mother tongue or best language. We offer the following languages at Language A level: English, German, Danish and Dutch. German mother tongue students are integrated with German Section classes, facilitating a larger range of friendships as well as more challenging levels of learning. Many of our students take two languages at Language A level making them truly bilingual.
Language B
Language B is considered a language that is learned in addition to the student’s mother tongue or best language. The MYP allows for three levels of language B: Foundation, Standard and Advanced. At GESS we offer Language B classes in English, German, French and Mandarin. Depending on the numbers of students, we aim to offer as many levels of Language B as possible, to allow students the best possible access to each language. This is particularly the case in English as this is our Language of instruction.
Physical Education
The MYP PE curriculum at GESS focuses on specific game and aquatic skills development, encouraging an awareness and understanding within the class context. These skills are then honed in the competitive sports programs run after school. Parallel to this we teach team work, health and wellness in order to foster an appreciation of physical activity that encourages all students to participate in sports for life.
Sciences
At GESS we teach Science as an integrated subject from grades 6 to 9. In grade ten students then receive separate instruction in Biology, Physics and Chemistry in preparation for the challenge of the Diploma in grades 11 and 12. Through the science course students have the opportunity for a wide range of experiential learning through hands on practical investigation.
Arts
The Arts comprise both Visual Arts and Performing Arts. At GESS students take both Music and Visual Arts in the lower grades and can choose either Music or Visual Arts in the upper grades of the MYP. We also offer Drama as a CCA.
Mathematics
Mathematics at GESS covers the areas of Algebra, Geometry, Number, Statistics and Probability, and Discrete Mathematics. In grades 9 and 10 we offer extended Mathematics for those students who display the motivation and ability to continue with Higher Level studies of Mathematics after the MYP.
Technology
Technology comprises Design Technology and Computer Technology and through these two topics, we cover information, materials and systems. Students study in both areas throughout the program and develop an appreciation for Technology in society as well as the MYP Technology design cycle.
Humanities
The Humanities in the MYP at GESS include Geography and History and, in the higher grades, Economics. Students study units in each discrete discipline, but also units that combine two or all three of the disciplines.
